1994-2005 Ram Cummins Diesel Clutch Kit Options

In 1994, Dodge introduced the new Ram with a 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel. The manual transmission options on this truck were as follows:

  • Between 1994 and 1998, the only manual transmission available was the NV4500HD 5-speed.
  • In 1999, Dodge offered both the NV4500HD 5-speed and the NV5600 6-speed, and both were continued until April 2005
  • The NV5600 6-speed was desirable not only because of the additional gear. It also utilizes a larger flywheel than the NV4500HD (13" vs 12.25"). It was rated for an additional 150 lb-ft of torque (600 lb-ft compared to the NV4500HD's rating of 450lb-ft).
  • Beginning in May 2005, Dodge offered the G56 transmission instead (we've got clutch kit info for the G56 here)
  • Finally, all the NV4500HD and NV5600 gearboxes featured a solid flywheel. Meaning that owners of 1994-2005 Ram trucks with a Cummins diesel (thru April 2005) have options. They can potentially resurfacetheir flywheel, rather than replace it.
  • Trucks made after May 2005 have a Dual Mass Flywheel which is either replaced or converted over to a solid flywheel.
  • Depending on what your Ram is and what transmission you have (5-speed or 6-speed), the information above will help. You can determine what you need to buy to work with your factory gearbox.

Woven Organic v. Ceramic v. Kevlar v. FeramAlloy - Which is Best? 

Choosing the right clutch disc friction material is important. The material largely determines clutch performance. For the 1994-2005 Ram diesel trucks (thru April 2005), we offer four different clutch material options:

  • Woven Organic, which is great for trucks that are largely stock and utilized for "normal" duty. Woven organic is also a good choice for trucks with mild performance upgrades (like a basic engine tune). When opting for a Stage kit that has organic facings, you will receive a disc with heavy duty commercial grade facings. They have more metal content to handle increased loads while running cooler to extend clutch life.
  • Ceramic,which we recommend for trucks that are either: A) used for heavy-duty hauling and towing. B) substantially more powerful than stock. Ceramic clutch discs are for extreme use scenarios (it is being replaced by FeramAlloy in towing applications - see below).
  • Kevlar,which is largely comparable to both organic and ceramic, but with smoother engagement. What's more, kevlar lasts a very long time, making it a great choice for truck owners who want to extend clutch life as long as possible
  • FeramAlloy,which is a relatively new material that most other clutch manufacturers don't offer. We've found it to be superior to ceramic clutch material, as it engages more smoothly yet offers similar levels of heat and wear resistance.

When choosing a material, you want to pay attention to both intended use and engine torque rating, and match them up to your truck. Also, we suggest that mostly stock truck owners look carefully at kevlar, as it lasts 2-3 times longer than woven organic material.

NOTE: If you want to upgrade your NV4500HD transmission to use a 13" flywheel like the NV5600, we have kits that include an upgraded flywheel.

Woven Organic Disc Clutch Kits

Woven organic is the material of choice when the goal is to maintain the smooth engagement. Organic clutch discs are made of metal fibers, woven into organic fiber. It offers increased torque capacity over stock. The increased capacity is due to the higher clamp load pressure plate. There’s only a slight increase in pedal effort (10-25%) over stock.

  • Daily Driver
  • Hauling/Towing on Asphalt

Ceramic Disc Clutch Kits

Ceramic clutches are a mixture of materials. They’re comprised of: Copper, iron, tin bronze, silicon dioxide, and/or graphite. Ceramic discs have extreme heat resistance. When broken in, have a short slip period when engaged. The ceramic buttons work well for off-road trucks. Our ceramic button discs are engineered to stop chatter. They are best used under normal engagement.

Kevlar Disc Clutch Kits

Kevlar clutches are made with para-aramid fibers. These clutches offer longevity and smooth engagement. They have a low static-to-dynamic friction co-efficient. This makes them ideal when smooth engagement is needed. These clutches have a higher break-in period due to higher clamping pressures. However, their durability is stellar.

FeramAlloy Disc Clutch Kits

This is a newer material for clutches. FeramAlloy facings offer similar performance as ceramic. The difference it, they have much better static to dynamic ratio. The result of this is smoother engagement. These facings also have less chatter than ceramic versions. Phoenix Friction is one of the first to offer these in heavy-duty applications.
