Choosing the right clutch disc friction material is important. The material largely determines clutch performance. For the 1994-2005 Ram diesel trucks (thru April 2005), we offer four different clutch material options:
When choosing a material, you want to pay attention to both intended use and engine torque rating, and match them up to your truck. Also, we suggest that mostly stock truck owners look carefully at kevlar, as it lasts 2-3 times longer than woven organic material.

NOTE: If you want to upgrade your NV4500HD transmission to use a 13" flywheel like the NV5600, we have kits that include an upgraded flywheel.
Woven organic is the material of choice when the goal is to maintain the smooth engagement. Organic clutch discs are made of metal fibers, woven into organic fiber. It offers increased torque capacity over stock. The increased capacity is due to the higher clamp load pressure plate. There’s only a slight increase in pedal effort (10-25%) over stock.

Ceramic clutches are a mixture of materials. They’re comprised of: Copper, iron, tin bronze, silicon dioxide, and/or graphite. Ceramic discs have extreme heat resistance. When broken in, have a short slip period when engaged. The ceramic buttons work well for off-road trucks. Our ceramic button discs are engineered to stop chatter. They are best used under normal engagement.

Kevlar clutches are made with para-aramid fibers. These clutches offer longevity and smooth engagement. They have a low static-to-dynamic friction co-efficient. This makes them ideal when smooth engagement is needed. These clutches have a higher break-in period due to higher clamping pressures. However, their durability is stellar.

This is a newer material for clutches. FeramAlloy facings offer similar performance as ceramic. The difference it, they have much better static to dynamic ratio. The result of this is smoother engagement. These facings also have less chatter than ceramic versions. Phoenix Friction is one of the first to offer these in heavy-duty applications.
